The nitty gritty…

THE PROCESS

As a primarily online business, we’ve created a step by step guide to help customers understand how we work and what to expect throughout the process:

  1. Send us an email at bert@bertjewellery.com with pictures of rings that you/they love, your budget, desired gold colour, and any other relevant information about your tastes and preferences.

  2. We’ll then send you videos of sapphire or diamond options. Alternatively, if you’re local we may be able to arrange a meeting to show stones, please see our how can I book an appointment section below.

  3. We’ll finalise the design brief and sketch design options.

  4. Customer makes any final adjustments to the design and we send a quote.

  5. A 40% deposit is required, and once paid, work on the ring will start.

  6. Production commences, which is typically five weeks.

  7. Ring completed and an invoice for the balance is provided. At this point we will make pick-up arrangements or get delivery details for postage.

OUR STUDIO

  • Our studio is based in North Bondi, Sydney, Australia

  • We are primarily an online business with limited meeting availability. Appointments are essential and are usually booked out 4 weeks in advance. Bert is a one woman show - it’s just Siân designing and making every ring, sourcing every gem, and photographing the finished product. While we would love to meet with everyone, sometimes it’s just not possible and we’re grateful for your understanding.

  • To ensure our meeting is as productive as possible, we’ll need to know a few things from you beforehand. This is so we can have appropriate gemstones to show you and to make sure that Bert is a great fit to make your engagement ring. We can arrange a meeting time once we have this information from you. We take appointments Mon-Fri from 10am to 4pm. Consultations are charged at $150 for 60mins. This fee comes off the price of your ring if you choose to go ahead with it. The following prompts are a good starting point.

    • preferred alloy - white, yellow or rose gold or platinum

    • preferred type and shape of stone

    • timeline for completion

    • images of Bert or other rings as inspiration

    • ideal budget - good quality stones range in price dramatically (please note that all of our rings start at $5000 AUD)

  • As we are a bespoke atelier we don’t carry stock pieces for customers to try on. Every piece is one of a kind and 100% unique to you.

SIZING

  • We suggest getting professionally sized at a local jeweller to make sure you get the best fit. If you’re overseas, don’t worry, we can do an international ring size conversion for you.

  • We offer one free resize within the first 6 months of receiving your ring. Depending on the design, it can be resized within a certain range. The best thing to do is confirm your correct ring size by visiting a local jeweller, then contact us so we can organise the resize for you.

Finding out their finger size…

Another alternative is to find a ring that your partner wears (ideally on their left ring finger!) and take a picture of it laying over a ruler (like this one to the left) with the widest part laying over the millimetre markings. Ring sizes vary between your left and right hand, so keep in mind that a ring worn on their right hand may not fit their left ring finger.

Lastly, if you’re really stuck and struggling to find this vital piece of information out, send us a few photos of them with their hands in the frame. We’re quite good at guessing finger sizes from photos!

PRODUCTION

  • The design and consultation period we hope to work out in around 15 - 20 emails. Then once your design is signed off we expect it to take 4 - 6 weeks.

Please keep in mind that production time frames do not include shipping.

  • Once we know a bit about your tastes and preferences we can send a video of sapphires that suit the brief.

As no diamonds are kept in stock, these will be chosen by their size, colour, and clarity. We aim to maximise the size of the stone and balance this with choosing the brightest white colour and level of clarity we can (however not the absolute best as this will compromise the size). This is so that the stone can be as big as the customer can afford. We pride ourselves in striking this balance well, with diamonds always being eye clean.

  • We only make wedding rings for existing customers who have bought an engagement ring from us. Our range of wedding rings are featured HERE and are made to fit your engagement ring.

We can make custom wedding rings, however due to the more involved process, these start at $3500.

Unfortunately we don’t offer custom men’s rings at this time.

SHIPPING

  • We ship within Australia via Australia Post, registered, insured and trackable.

    We ship worldwide via FedEx.

Sydney customers may collect their order from Bert Jewellery in person, at our North Bondi workshop. We can also arrange our trusted couriers to deliver to you within Sydney.

Shipping costs are included in your quoted price, except for wedding rings where it is calculated separately. You will be contacted on dispatch of your order with a tracking number and details of how to track. All shipping options require a signature upon delivery.

  • Australia Post takes 1-2 days for metro areas and up to 7 days for non metro areas.

FedEx takes between 5-10 days to Europe and USA.

  • Our shipping methods are fully insured so your rings are covered whilst in transit. You must sign for your ring on delivery, and at this point they’re no longer considered in transit and no longer insured.

  • Some countries carry duties and taxes payable on imports over a certain value. As the recipient, you are liable for all import duties, customs and local sales taxes levied by the country you are shipping to. We recommend checking your local regulations as it varies between states and countries.

MATERIALS

  • At Bert, sustainable and ethical practices are at the heart of our values. We design and make all our jewellery here in Sydney, controlling every step of the process to ensure every part of our operation treats others with respect. That includes ethically sourced gems, conflict free diamonds, and sustainably grown timber for our ring boxes (made by a small, family run business).

  • We work with diamonds (both lab and mined) including champagne and fancy colours, as well as sapphires, rubies and emeralds. We don’t work with opals or semi precious birthstones at this time.

For centre stones, we work with a minimum size of 0.70ct.

  • All of the mined main diamonds we source are GIA certified and conflict free. This means every stone has been mined and cut in line with United Nations resolutions, has been purchased from legitimate suppliers, and are guaranteed to not be involved in funding conflict.  The side/smaller diamonds we use are also conflict free, however diamonds under 0.60ct are rarely certified due to the cost of certifying GIA diamonds.

All of our lab diamonds over 0.60ct are certified by the IGI and are purchased from our suppliers in Melbourne and New York.

  • We design and make all our rings here in sunny Sydney.

  • We work with only precious alloys (18ct yellow, white or rose gold and platinum).

HOW WE WORK

  • Unfortunately, we don’t work with heirloom pieces or remodel existing jewellery.

  • Unfortunately, we don’t work with client sourced stones, however we can always do our best to match your desired stone with one from our trusted suppliers.

RETURNS, CARE AND WARRANTY

  • As each piece is custom made to order, we are unable to offer refunds.

  • If you need to return your ring for any reason, please contact us beforehand so that we are prepared to receive it. Once we have confirmed the return process based on your request, you will be responsible for return freight. You will need to package the ring/s in the original box or other sufficiently protective packaging to ensure their safety in transit and prevent any damage. You will also need to ensure the ring is covered by insurance in transit by the courier, and that it is required to be signed for on delivery. Bert takes no responsibility for incoming packages while they are in transit. Once your piece has arrived safely and been processed, we will be in touch to confirm next steps.

    • Bert Jewellery pieces are all custom-made and cannot be exchanged or returned for change of mind.

    • Your piece is under a lifetime warranty for any product or manufacturing fault.

    • Reasonable repairs under normal wear are covered for the first two years after purchase. After two years, we will repair pieces at cost.

    • If the piece shows signs of damage from something other than normal wear, or from improper care, we will repair the piece at cost.

    • We will assess each repair request on a case by case basis and provide a quote for the repair prior to starting.

    • Customers are responsible for return shipping costs.

    • If another jeweller undertakes work on one of our pieces (including resizing and/or repairs) the warranty will be voided. We do not take any responsibility for repairs or resizes undertaken by other jewellers.

  • Insurance is essential for your Bert ring. We recommend specialist jewellery insurers Q Report and that you’re covered for loss, accidental damage or theft. You can find their website here.

  • To clean and care for your jewellery, use a soft toothbrush and soapy water. Remove the ring, rest it on a soft cloth, and scrub the underside of the diamonds and between the prongs with a mild dishwashing detergent. Rinse well with warm water and the ring will sparkle as new.

We recommend removing your jewellery when doing activities like housework or exercising, as this causes abrasions that will wear the ring prematurely. It’s also a good idea to remove it while applying lotions and perfume, or washing your hands and showering. If left on, sticky residue, soap, and the oil from your skin can build up.
