The nitty gritty…

THE PROCESS

Bert Jewellery is a bespoke, made-to-order jeweller based in North Bondi, Sydney. Here's how the process works from first contact to finished ring:

  1. Email me at bert@bertjewellery.com with photos of rings you love, your budget, preferred gold colour, and any other details about your style and preferences.

  2. I'll send you videos of diamond or sapphire options that match your brief. If you're local, I may be able to arrange an in-studio meeting to view stones — see Can I book an appointment? below.

  3. I finalise the design brief and sketch up options for you.

  4. You review the design, make any final adjustments, and I send through a quote.

  5. A 40% deposit is required to begin work.

  6. Production takes approximately five weeks.

  7. Once your piece is complete, I invoice for the balance and arrange pick-up or delivery.

OUR STUDIO

  • Bert Jewellery is based in North Bondi, Sydney, Australia.

  • Yes, though availability is limited. Bert Jewellery is a one-woman studio — I design and make every piece, source every stone, and photograph the finished product. Appointments are essential and typically booked weeks in advance. I take appointments Monday to Friday, 10am–4pm.

To book, email me with the following so I can prepare appropriately:

    • Preferred metal — white, yellow, or rose gold, or platinum

    • Preferred stone type and shape

    • Your timeline

    • Inspiration images (Bert pieces or others you love)

    • Budget (please note all Bert Jewellery pieces start from $6,000 AUD)

  • Bert Jewellery doesn't carry stock pieces — every ring is made to order and completely unique to you. There are no sample rings available to try on.

If you get lucky, I may have just finished up a ring or two that I can show you, but these tend to fly out of the door as soon as I make them.

SIZING

  • The most accurate way is to visit a local jeweller and ask to be professionally sized. If you're overseas, I can convert international ring sizes for you.

  • Bert Jewellery offers one free resize within the first six months of receiving your ring. Depending on the design, there's a range within which resizing is possible. If you're unsure of your size, I recommend getting sized at a local jeweller before I begin production.

Finding out their finger size…

Can't find out your partner's size discreetly?
Take a ring they wear on their left ring finger and photograph it against a ruler, with the widest point over the millimetre markings. You can also send me a few photos of their hands — I'm quite good at estimating finger sizes from photos.

PRODUCTION

  • The design and consultation phase typically takes around 15–20 emails to finalise. Once the design is signed off, production takes 4–6 weeks. Please note that production timeframes don't include shipping time.

  • Once I understand your tastes and budget, I'll send video of stones that suit your brief. Sapphires are shown by colour and character. For diamonds, I select by size, colour, and clarity — I balance maximising carat weight while maintaining a bright white, eye-clean stone. I pride myself on striking this balance well.

  • Bert Jewellery makes wedding rings for existing customers who have purchased their engagement ring with me. My wedding ring range is made to pair with your engagement ring. You can find some wedding ring inspiration here https://www.bertjewellery.com/wedding-rings

  • Yes. Bert Jewellery works with both mined and lab grown diamonds. All lab grown diamonds over 1.00ct are IGI certified and sourced from trusted suppliers in Melbourne and New York. Lab grown diamonds are physically and chemically identical to mined diamonds.

  • Lab grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment but are identical in composition, appearance, and hardness to mined diamonds. The main differences are origin and price — lab grown diamonds typically cost less for the same carat weight and grade. Bert Jewellery works with both, and I'm happy to talk through which is right for you.

PRICING

  • All Bert Jewellery pieces start from $6,000 AUD. The final price depends on the metal, stone type, carat weight, and design complexity. I work with a range of budgets within that starting point — the best way to get an accurate estimate is to email me with your brief.

  • A 40% deposit is required to begin work on your piece. The remaining balance is invoiced once your ring is complete and ready for delivery or collection.

SHIPPING

  • Yes. Bert Jewellery ships within Australia via Australia Post (registered, insured, and trackable). International orders are sent via FedEx. Sydney customers can collect from my North Bondi studio, or I can arrange trusted courier delivery within Sydney. Shipping costs are included in your quoted price, except for wedding rings which are calculated separately.

  • Within Australia, Australia Post delivers in 1–2 days for metro areas and up to 7 days for regional areas. International FedEx delivery takes 3–10 days to Europe and the USA.

  • Yes. All Bert Jewellery orders are fully insured in transit. A signature is required upon delivery — once signed for, the piece is no longer considered in transit.

  • Import duties and local taxes vary by country and are the responsibility of the recipient. I recommend checking your local regulations before ordering.

MATERIALS & ETHICS

  • Yes. Ethical and sustainable practices are central to how Bert Jewellery operates. Every piece is designed and made in Sydney, giving me full control over the process. I use ethically sourced gemstones, conflict-free diamonds, and sustainably sourced timber for my ring boxes (made by a small, family-run business in New Zealand).

  • I work with diamonds (mined and lab grown, including champagne and fancy colour diamonds), sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. I don't currently work with opals or semi-precious birthstones.

  • Yes. All mined diamonds used by Bert Jewellery are GIA certified and conflict-free, sourced in compliance with UN resolutions. Smaller side diamonds (under 0.60ct) are also conflict-free, though GIA certification is rarely applied to stones of that size due to cost. All lab grown diamonds over 0.60ct are IGI certified.

  • Bert Jewellery works exclusively with precious alloys: 18ct yellow, white, or rose gold, and platinum.

  • Every Bert Jewellery piece is designed and made in Sydney, Australia.

HOW I WORK

  • Unfortunately, I don't remodel or rework existing jewellery or heirloom pieces.

  • I don't work with client-supplied stones, but I can do my best to source a stone that matches what you have in mind through my trusted suppliers.

  • Yes — my Instagram (@bertjewellery) is the best place to see my portfolio, with hundreds of completed bespoke pieces. You can also browse the Fine Jewellery and Wedding Rings pages on the website.

RETURNS, CARE AND WARRANTY

  • As every piece is custom-made to order, Bert Jewellery is unable to offer refunds for change of mind.

  • Contact me before returning anything so I can prepare to receive it. You'll be responsible for return freight, original or equivalent protective packaging, and insuring the piece in transit with a signature required on delivery. Bert Jewellery takes no responsibility for items while in transit.

    • All pieces carry a lifetime warranty against product or manufacturing faults.

    • Reasonable repairs from normal wear are covered for the first two years after purchase. After two years, repairs are carried out at cost.

    • Damage from improper care or other than normal wear is repaired at cost.

    • Each repair request is assessed individually, and a quote is provided before work begins.

    • Return shipping costs are the customer's responsibility.

    • Important: If another jeweller performs work on a Bert Jewellery piece — including resizing or repairs — the warranty is voided.

  • Yes — jewellery insurance is essential for your Bert piece. I recommend specialist insurer Q Report, who cover loss, accidental damage, and theft.

  • Clean your ring with a soft toothbrush and mild dishwashing detergent in warm water. Rest the ring on a soft cloth, scrub the underside of stones and between the prongs, then rinse well. Remove your ring when doing housework, exercising, applying lotions or perfume, or washing your hands — these activities cause abrasion and residue buildup that can dull the finish over time.
